  • Spain Starting on July 17, a large swarm of 8000+ small earthquakes up to magnitude 3.5 struck El Hierro, Canary Islands. As of late September, this swarm is ongoing. On September 24, the Canary Islands government raised the volcanic alert status to yellow.

  • Russia A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near the Kuril Islands on August 4.
  • Israel A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Israel on August 7. This is the first known earthquake to strike the Dead Sea region in recorded history.
  • United Kingdom A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Ascension Island on August 10.
  • Indonesia A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Ceram Sea on August 16.
  • Japan A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, on August 17.
  • Fiji A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Fiji region on August 19.
  • Japan A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck near the east coast of Honshu, Japan, on August 19.
  • Vanuatu A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Port Vila, Vanuatu; this was followed by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake less than twenty minutes later, which was followed 1 hour 6 minutes later by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on August 20.
  • Indonesia A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southwest of Sumatra, Indonesia, on August 22.
  • United States/Canada A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Mineral, Virginia, USA, on August 23, coming about 12 hours after a 5.3 earthquake in Colorado. This is a rare occurrence.
  • Czech Republic/Germany From August 23 to August 26, a swarm of almost 10,000 small quakes struck West Bohemia, near the Czech-Germany border. The largest of these quakes was a magnitude 3.6, which was felt in nearby towns of Chemnitz, Karlovy Vary, Birch, and Luby.
  • Peru/Brazil A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck northern Peru near the Brazilian border on August 24. Local newspapers reported that the earthquake was felt in Lima and in Rio Branco.
  • Vanuatu A magnitude 6.2 earthquake south-west of Port Vila, Vanuatu, on August 24.
