Bangladesh Cricket Teams tour to Pakistan Challenged in Court

Update:

The High Court on Thursday directed the authorities concerned not to send Bangladesh cricket team to Pakistan for playing match for next 4 (four) weeks.

In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the authorities to explain why the move to make a tour for Bangladesh cricket team to Pakistan should not be declared illegal.

The secretary of the Youth and Sports Ministry, the chairman of National Sports Council and president of Bangladesh Cricket Board have been made respondents to the rule.

Earlier:

The BCB decision to send Bangladesh cricketers to play Pakistan on a short trip to the strife-torn country has been challenged in court.

“The petition was placed at the bench of justices Farid Ahmed and Sheikh Hassan Arif in the morning. The High Court will hear the petition seeking an order to stop the visit at 3pm,” the petitioners’ lawyer Hasan M S Azim said.

The petitioners, Supreme Court lawyer Kamal Hossain Miazi and Daffodil International University ‘slaw department chairman Khandker Didar-Us-Salam, cited security concerns for seeking such an injunction.

Clarifying his clients’ argument, Azim said, “ICC [International Cricket Council] declared the tour after sitting with BCB [Bangladesh Cricket Board] and PCB [Pakistan Cricket Board] on Sunday. ICC asked for a security plan from PCB. They have still not given it.”

He continued, “Pakistan is not safe for any foreign teams now. Their own media including their English daily Dawn says so. For that reason, no country agrees to play there. Under the same circumstances, we should not go there also.”

The two teams are scheduled to play a one-dayer on Apr 29 and a Twenty20 international the next day at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
