Duronto Rajshahi is the first team to reach BPL 2012 Semi-finals

Duronto Rajshahi is the first team to reach BPL 2012 Semi-finals

Duronto Rajshahi cantered to an easy eight-wicket victory over Khulna Royal Bengals that confirmed their BPL semi-final place as the first team at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Marlon Samuels was the star of the chase, scoring a 38-ball 50 with seven fours and two sixes and getting out with only six to win from 46 deliveries.

Junaid Siddique, who played the sheet anchor’s role, then took Rajshahi to an easy victory in the company of Sean Ervine with a pulled four off Nazmul Hossain Milon with 35 balls to spare.

Shahzaib Hasan got the chase off to an electric start scoring 28 off 12 balls with five fours and a six. When he was stumped off Khulna skipper Shakib Al Hasan the score had reached 31 off 2.3 overs, and the match had already slipped out of Khulna’s grasp.

Samuels then drove home the advantage attacking from the start and building a 71-run stand with Siddique for the second wicket. Shakib was the only bowler able to rein in the Duronto batsmen with figures of 17 for 1 off his four overs, but it was too little too late from the Khulna skipper.

Chasing a measly 107 to win, Rajshahi were never going to have any trouble

Earlier Khulna Royal Bengals made a meal of their golden opportunity to book a BPL semi-final ticket, being dismissed for a paltry 106 in only 18.5 overs after choosing to bat first.

Rajshahi on the other hand showed great resilience on the field to dominate a strong Khulna outfit and put one foot in the door of the semi-finals.

Mohammad Sami and Ervine inflicted the most damage on Khulna, each taking three wickets and going at under four runs an over. Sami started the rout by trapping opener Sanath Jayasuriya off the second ball of the innings, and Abdul Razzaq got the other opener Herschelle Gibbs in the next over. From two down for only five runs a mini-recover was staged by Dwayne Smith and Niall O’ Brien, who added 34 for the third wicket.

But Smith’s fall to fellow West Indian Marlon Samuels plunged the Royal Bengals into further trouble, which was only worsened when Shakib was bowled by impressive young left-armer Saqlain Sajib with the score on 55. It was all downhill from there as Sean Ervine dismissed Nasir Hossain and Andre Adams while Tajul Islam got rid of Nazmul Hossain Milon by the 13th over.

All semblance of resistance ended when O’ Brien, who was the only Khulna batsman to display some form with a 38-ball 35 was caught off Ervine to leave Khulna reeling at 86 for eight. The last three added 20 before Mohammad Sami came back to castle Sahagir Hossain and have Abdur Razzak caught behind to bring a sorry end to the Khulna innings.

Sean Ervine was adjudged man-of-the-match for his match-turning spell of 3 for 19.

Barisal Burners vs Duronto Rajshahi : Feb11, 2012 BPL Match-4: Barisal Burners opener Ahmed Shehzad smacks one through mid-wicket during his 67 against Duronto Rajshahi in the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday

Amidst the West Indian players’ dominance, Pakistani Ahmed Shehzad made him apparent to seal consecutive second victory for Barisal Burners as they secured another comprehensive 22-run win over Duronto Rajshahi in the BPL match at the Sher4-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday. Ahmed Shehzad’s stylish half-century in the first match was largely unnoticed due to Gayle’s marauding innings. But as Gayle failed to carry on his start, Shehzad got an ample chance to make the day for him. He utilized it in full effect hammering a blazing 40 ball-67 that handed Rajshahi a successive second defeat.

Relying on swift timing, he plundered the bowlers right from the start and stretched his innings at same pace. Riding on his brilliant knock, Barisal amassed a gigantic 180 for two which was improbable for Rajshahi as they were able to score 158 for nine.Gayle indicated another storm as he hurled the baton like the previous day but it was over when his compatriot Marlon Samuels forced him catch behind the wicket. By then he caused a mental breakdown for Rajshahi bowlers with his 39 off 23 that included four fours and two sixes. The satisfactory number of crowd that turned up after the ticket price was slashed however had not to be disappointed as Shehzad compensated Gayle’s dismissal well having played a whirlwind knock.
Abdul Razzak then brought up some relief for Rajshahi getting rid of him when he was on 67. His 40 balls knock was designed with four fours and six huge sixes.

Brad Hodge and Shahriar Nafees further went on onslaught to take Barisal a favourable position. Hodge played an unbeaten 25 ball-38 while Nafees was on 28.

With the back up of huge total, Barisal bowlers bowled with utmost confidence to keep Rajshahi at bay. The disciplined bowling was complimented by superb fielding that caused the run-out of skipper Mushfiqur Rahim after Zuaned Siddique (5) and Marlon Samuels (8) once again failed to deliver. The match was over for Rajshahi when Abdul Razzak also was removed by Nazmul Islam Apu scoring 27. Comparatively unknown opener Mijanur Rahman made highest 65 off 52.

BPL T20 Match-3 Result: Russell blows Dhaka away

BPL T20 Match-3 Result & Report : Dhaka Gladiators vs Khulna Royal Bengals

Dhaka-Gladiators-vs-Khulna-Royal-Bengals-Feb-11

Khulna Royal Bengals won by 19 runs against Dhaka Gladiators on Feb 11, 2012

Andre Russell blew Dhaka Gladiators away with superb all-round performance to script a 19-run win for Khulna Royal Bengals in their opening match at Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday. . Russell sparkled with batting in the late order to blast an unbeaten 15 ball-37 runs while snared four wickets to hasten Khulna’s win.

Following the footstep of his compatriot Chris Gayle, who shined in with 44 ball-101 runs in the tournament opener and Dwayne Bravo who put up a brilliant all-round effort in the evening match on Friday, Russell further lifted the Caribbean dominance.

After Khulna skipper Shakib Al Hasan steadied the middle order, Russell provided blitz in the late order to guide Khulna post a strong total of 175 for five. Later Russell led the disciplined bowling effort to restrict Dhaka to 156 for seven.

The starting of Khulna however was bit sluggish but they rotated the scoreboard nicely to set the platform. Dhaka’s Pakistani recruit Azhar Mahmood basically took an anchor role to check Khulna opener Herchelle Gibbs and Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s flamboyance.

They however went after Mashrafe Bin Mortoza and other bowlers at ease and later tried to break the shackle by counterattacking Mahmood which caused both of the opener’s dismissal.
Shakib Al Hasan and Dwayne Smith then concentrated on to build up a strong base as they kept the wicket intact and kept the pace of run flow simultaneously. After adding 71-run along with Shakib, Smith chose to attack but offered a simple catch. He scored 37 off 31 with three fours and a six.

Dhaka Gladiators however re-established their dominance by removing Shakib and Nazmul Hossain Milon at the same score. Shakib blasted 42 off 31 hitting five fours.

The quick wicket loss had no impact on Andre Russell and Nasir Hossain. They quickly settled  in the crease and went for a big shot repeatedly. Without being care any bowlers, they charged mercilessly to add an unbeaten 59 off just 27 deliveries.

Russell clubbed three sixes and two fours on his 37 off 15 while Nasir was equally effective by hammering 12 ball-22 with two fours and a six.

Mahmood scalped two wickets while Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Elias Sunny and Mosharraf Hossain Rubel picked up one wicket apiece.

Opener Imran Nazir and Nazimuddin provided early flames in the face of gigantic total but Shakib’s intelligent bowling change tied them up. Shakib himself however drew the blood first having scalped Imran Nazir but it was Russell who paved the way of facile victory by removing Azhar Mahmood. Mahmood, who struck 16 ball-28, dismantled Khulna’s bowling line-up at will. He later brought up double delight for Khulna having broken Ashraful’s resistance and the onus lied on big-hitter Keiron Pollard.

Knowing Pollard’s shortcomings against spin bowling, Shakib brought himself in operation and later called up Abdur Razzak. The strategy paid off as Pollard failed to take any big hit which was badly needed in that phase.

Russell then came back in his last spell to scalp Stevens and Mashrafe in two consecutive deliveries to ensure the victory. Pollard though remained unbeaten on 32 ball-42, it did not help Dhaka to overcome Khulna.

An unbeaten century by opener Chris Gayle guided Barisal Burners to a comfortable 10-wicket victory over Sylhet Royals in the opening match of Bangladesh Premier League T20 tournament in Dhaka on Friday.

Barisal Burners reached their target in only 13.1 overs as Gayle cracked 101 off 44 while his Pakistani opening partner Ahmed Shehzad smashed 56 off 35.

Earlier, Sylhet Royals made a fighting score of 165 losing four wickets depending on two half-centuries by PD Trego (62) and Alok Kapali (56) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Barisal Burners bowlers Yasir Arafat captured two wickets while SM Harwood and Suhrawadi Shuvo took one wicket each.

Barisal Burners won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Back to the Gayle innings, it seems like where there is a Twenty20 tournament to be played, there is Chris Gayle to smash a hundred. He scored his fifth Twenty20 century in the past year to take Barisal Burners to an easy win against Sylhet Royals in the opening game of the Bangladesh Premier League. Sylhet’s total of 165 seemed like a competitive one, but Gayle made a mockery of it, smashing 10 sixes and seven fours in his 101 off 44 balls. Barisal were home in 13.1 overs.

Keeping Gayle company was Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad, who scored 56 off 35 balls with nine fours and a six. Sylhet’s Australian import, Brad Hogg, could not keep Gayle quiet, and went for 27 in his three overs. Hogg didn’t have it as bad as two other Sylhet overseas players – Peter Trego and Scott Styris went for 23 and 27 in their only overs.

Trego had earlier helped Sylhet recover from a sluggish start to reach a decent total, with his 62. His 105-run partnership with Alok Kapali (56) formed the bulk of Sylhet’s total.
