An overwhelming performance in both batting and bowling enhanced the confidence of Chittagong Kings as they were bullish about their chance against mighty Khulna Royal Bengals. Both of the team opened their account with victory and therefore the stage was set for a promising battle in the Bangladesh Premier League BPL T20, scheduled to be held on Sunday.
While Chittagong Kings kick-started their journey with a comprehensive 53-run win over Duronto Rajshahi, Khulna Royal Bengals brushed aside Dhaka Gladiators by 19 runs.
Chittagong Kings might break their winning combination since their foreign recruits Jerome Taylor and Kevin Cooper arrived in the country on Friday.
Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the head coach of the Chittagong Kings indicated that they would field a slightly different side considering the opponent’s power.
“Considering the opponents’ strength, we might bring a change in the best XI against Khulna. It’s not always right that you have to field your winning combination,” said Sujon.
“Our foreign recruit Jerome Taylor and Kevin Cooper arrived in the country. They are likely to take field in the second match,” he added.
The former assistant coach of Bangladesh national team Sujon thought that the victory in the first match boosted up the players and that would play a vital role in the match against Khulna as well.
“It’s not that Rajshahi were a bad team. In fact they are a good side but unfortunately it was not their day. We were superlative in both batting and bowling department. That’s what we wanted in the opening game,” he clarified.
“It was important for the team to make a solid start and it will increase the confidence of the team.”
Chittagong Kings apparently though looked stronger side on paper and justified the tag with a comprehensive win against Rajshahi, Sujon warned against any complacency.
“Each and every team in the tournament is quite good. There is no opportunity to take any team lightly. Khulna are undoubtedly a good team with a classy overseas and local players but we are confident enough about our chance,” the former all-rounder reckoned.
“They have some well-established batsmen, including Sanath Jayasuriya, Gibbs, Russell, Smith and Chanderpaul and bowlers, who have been in good form. We are also a good and balanced team. Hopefully all could enjoy a good cricket. ”
Chittagong Kings became the first team in the flagship event to score over 200-run.
“After the batsmen’s performance it became easier for me to rotate the batsmen and bowlers. As it’s a grueling tournament, we are focused on to rotate the players well so that we can keep them fit always,” he remarked.
Sujon however wanted the icon player and opener Tamim Iqbal to fire up at the top of the order.
“Tamim could not fire up in the first match. We were bit sluggish initially but however we overcame the odds eventually. We need runs from the top order as you can’t expect the middle to fire always.”
Meanwhile Dhaka Gladiators will take on Sylhet Royals in the day’s other match. Both of the team tasted defeat in their first match. While Sylhet were thumped by 10-wicket by Barisal Burners following a Chris Gayle blitz and Dhaka were outclassed by Khulna.
